About Balikpapan

Balikpapan is a seaport city on the eastern coast of Borneo island in the East Kalimantan province, a resource-rich region well known for its timber, mining and petroleum export products. Two harbors, Semayang and Somber, and the Sepinggan International Airport are the main transportation access to and from the city.

Geography

The topography of the municipality of Balikpapan is generally hilly (85%), with only small areas of flatland (15%), particularly along the coast and surrounding the hilly areas. The hills are less than 100 meters higher than the adjacent valleys. The altitude of Balikpapan ranges from 0 to 80 meters above sea level.

Most of the soil in Balikpapan contains yellow-reddish podsolic soil and alluvial and quartz sand, making it extremely prone to erosion.

History

Prior to the oil boom, Balikpapan was an isolated Bugis fishing village. The etimology of Balikpapan name (lit. balik is behind and papan is a plank) came from a folk story where a local king threw his newborn daughter into the sea to protect her against his enemies. The baby was tied beneath some planks, which were discovered by a fisherman.[citation needed]

In 1897, the first drilling of oil began by a small refinery company. Roads, wharves, wharehouses, offices, barracks and bungalows construction started when a Dutch oil company arrived in the area. On January 24, 1942, Balikpapan became a war theatre between Japanese army and the Allied Forces in which the oil refinery and other facilities were heavily damaged. Several campaigns followed until the 1945 Battle of Balikpapan which concluded the Allied Forces' Borneo campaign after which they took control of the Borneo island.

Extensive wartime damaged almost total oil production in the area and a major repairs were performed by the Royal Dutch Shell company. Shell continued operating in the area until Indonesian state-owned Pertamina took it over in 1965. Having lack of technology, skilled manpower and capital to explore the petroleum region, Pertamina sublet petroleum concession contracts to multinational companies in the 1970s.

Being the only oil refinery site in the region, Balikpapan emerged as a revitalized center of petroleum production. Pertamina opened its regional headquarter in the city, followed by branch offices establishment by international oil companies. Hundreds of labourers from other part of Indonesia and skilled expatriates as managers and engineers, flocked into the city.

Economy

Some multinational corporations have commercial activities in this city such as Pertamina (Indonesia), Total S.A. (France), Chevron (US), Schlumberger, and Halliburton (US). Government public services also attract many people to work in this area, with presence of Bank Indonesia, Finance Department, Port of Semayang, and several others.

Balikpapan oil refinery is located on the shore of Balikpapan Bay and covers an area of 2.5 km². Established in 1922, it is the oldest refinery in the area. It was destroyed in World War II by the Allies of World War II and re-built in 1950. The refinery has two subunits, Balikpapan I and Balikpapan II.

Balikpapan I consists of two raw oil refinery units that produce naphtha, kerosene, gasoline, diesel fuel, and residue and one high-vacuum unit that produces 100 tonnes (approx 98 tons) of paraffin oil distillate (POD), used as raw material for wax factories. The wax itself has various grades and is sold domestically and internationally.

Opened on November 1, 1983, Balikpapan II has a hydro-skimming and hydro-cracking refinery and produces petrol, LPG, naphtha, kerosene, and diesel fuel.

Transportation

Balikpapan's airport is the Sepinggan International Airport. This is the second busiest Indonesian airport after Soekarno-Hatta International Airport [citation needed] and permits large aircraft.

Airlines currently using the airport are Lion Air, Merpati Airlines, Batavia Air, Kartika Airlines, Sriwijaya Air (domestic routes), and Garuda Indonesia, Air Asia, and Silk Air (International routes).

The airport is one of the five principle sites in Indonesia where Muslims begin the pilgrimage to Mecca, the "Hajj". Between 1996 and 1997, the airport served over 4,500 East Kalimantan pilgrims, and from 1997 to 1998, it served pilgrims from East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, and North Sulawesi.

Other than the airport, Balikpapan also has a seaport called "Semayang" which has many destinations to Surabaya, Makasssar, Jakarta, Pare-Pare, and Manado. in 1990s, transportation using ships was very popular. But after the booming of so many new airlines with very cheap price, people now prefer travelling using airplanes to the ships.

The ferry is also another alternative for traveling to other places within coastal areas in East Kalimantan, such as Penajam.

Arrival Balikpapan 12th Feb 2008

We are departing for Balikpapn Indonesia !!! Okta is going home !
We arrive at Changi Airport at 1130am and our flight is at 1430. Nope, not that we misread the flight time on our ticket. We are going to explore in WELL PROMOTED terminal 3.

Indeed, terminal 3 is really grand and modern.

Had a rear glimpse of the Airbus A380.

Our flight to jarkatar, Qatar Airways, QA626. A airbus made A370.

No bad, equipped with in flight entertainments.

The meals served on board, yucks ...... HORRIBLE ...... i suppose that will be the worst in flight dining i ever had. Tasteless dry chicken breast chop.

Flight time is 1hour 45mins time to sleep ......

Awaken by a series violent vibration upon approaching Jakarta's international airport. Gosh .... Darken sky, heavy down pour. Can't even see whats outside of the window. everything is Grey and white. The plane is shaking as if it gonna shatter itself in pieces.

The plane landed... smoothly... Out of a sudden, everyone burst into claps. Well, we applauded too for the smooth landing in such horrible weather. On did you guys know that its flooding in downtown Jarkatar. Saw the news on board the aircraft in flight entertainment system.

Jakarta time : 1545. Collected my bags and desperately looking for the Garuda Airlines Sales counter for the purchase of my connecting flight to Balikapapan. this guy walks up to us and identify himself as a Garuda Airlines sales person. Potters are common over there. Since we won't want to waste time wondering looking for the sales counter, we agreed to let him lead us an carry our baggages.

Took a life up to the departure hall a level up. And the lift took 15mins to descend from level 2 to level 1.

Was shock to see the price. 1,050,000 rupiah for one person, one way. Including all taxes. Boarding time is 1730. Look at my watch, oh shit, we only have like 60mins to check in. We quickly head for the check-in counter. The guy then follows with our baggages.
When entering the departure hall, the guy suddenly stopped. Asking for tips ...... sigh ... oh well, Welcome to Indonesia. Opened my wallet and guess what, the smallest note inside was 50,000 rupiah. Asked hom for a change, he said no. So what to do.... 50,000 rupiah tips. Consider that most people only give 1,000 to 10,000 rupiah for tips. You could see his 2 rows of teeth flashing with eyes opened so big as if the eyes balls are popping out of the socket.

Smooth check in and on our way to the boarding room when we come to this counter, demanding us to pay airport tax. DIN i just paid the tax which is included in the airfare ?
Sorry baby, different department.....

Flight time : 1h 50 mins

On board flight meal. WONDERFUL !! nasi Brani !!!!! the Indonesia yellow ginger rice with not so spicy curry chicken drumstick. This is what i call food !!!! As compare to those made in Singapore. SG sux !!!! One for the Indonesian and nil for the Singaporean.

Yes finally at Local time, 9pm which happen to be the same as Singapore time. We touched down saftly on the land of Balikpapan !!!!

Okta is home !! i know she missed her home dearly. after all, its been 1 year or so since she step foot on her home soil. Tiring draggy journey. netherless, We are safe and sound.

PEOPLE and MORE People Car and more JAMS !!

As you know, Chinese New Year is Just round the corner. Every typical Singaporean will shop at the last minutes. Year in year out, this habit never change. Just look at the chaos

You notice that the MRT entrance are clear. Thats because the officers from the station are stopping the people from crowding at the station entrance

So these are those people trying to get comfy and stuck in a long wait trying to get tthe ir precious vehicle into the car park which are already FULL. The parking spaces over at my area are Pathetically limited..... So awaiting for the coming last weekend before Chinese New Year. Hopefully that it WILL be super pack. Until no one can breath and start fainting due to lack of Oxygen... LOL ... (no la , we are not so mean, we do have backup Oxyegn tanks for emergency.. lol)

So a piece of advice for those who are driving into Chinatown area, please, put your baby at home or a nearby carpark and take our Nation's MOST efficient transport system to shop here.
It wouldn't be very enjoying spending few hours just to get your car into a parking lot.

Oh ya, another word of caution, please try not to bring your new born baby here as well. My place here does not have centralize air con. So when it get crowded, it kind of stuffy and hot and humid. Not a good place for your cute babies. Of cause, your pram .... Blocking other's way ...

:)

Busy Year 2008 - Sibuk Tahun

2 (wedding) + 2 (Photoshoot) + 1.5 Honeymoon = ONE HAPPY MARRIED COUPLE
Yes, this is what we will be heading to after the Lunar New Year....

Coming with it are frustrations, headache and lots of planning and of course lots of $$$$$$ to be spend. Well, its ONCE in a life time and to add more to it, How many people could actually be married to the same women or man twice ? lol !!!!!

Eric will be flying to Balikpapan for his first Lunar New Year as a Son-in-Law, previously he was only kb pacar. So for the next 10 days or so he is going to be Indonesian....

It will be tough to leave behind all the luxury of life to be there only to enjoy the slightly above average luxury. Okta is going to miss her HOT bath there since there is no available water heaters. At least, the room is air-conditioned. Eric is going to miss his cyber life, his Hantutetek and of course, his metallic mistress !!!! LOL....

It will be nice for us that worked so hard and finally able to de-stress without worries of handphones telephones, emails, work and daily hustle of city life...

Commencing Project perkawinan Part 1

Finally, we decided to start preparing for our wedding.
Although it is still 327 days away from our BIG DAY. Preparation has to start somewhere.
So heres the checklist

1) Venue - CONFIRMED
2) Bridal Studio - Haven started looking
3) Photo shoot - Haven started looking
4) Wedding Theme - Still researching
5) Customary barang barang - Still compiling on the list of stuff to buy.

So far we can only think of these.

Interesting part of the booking of the venue.
We actually had to fight over the booking with another couple to secure the place.
We called up most of the hotel and the ballrooms, function rooms for that day were all taken up. So only ONE, available function is on tentative booking. We ask the Banquet Sales person if we could be placed first on the waiting list and the moment they doesn't want the booking, we will take. She told us that she will ask the other couple and reply us the answer next week.

So fair enough, next week came and we went down to the hotel for viewing. Everything seems fine, terms and conditions were good. The function rooms was a bit disappointing. We were actually looking for ballrooms with high pillar less ceiling with huge dangling chandeliers. But then no choice .... make do with it since there wasn't much option left.

So we asked, what is the reply from the other couple. The Banquet Sales Person told us to give them more time to discuss. We were like, WHAT !!!! You told us that you will have the answer today and now is like sorry the other side haven confirm.

So i insist that i must have a answer today. NOW NOW NOW !!!!! She called the other party and they requested to give us the answer next week. NEXT WEEK AGAIN !?!?!? So i asked, Do i get this place when NEXT WEEKS comes? She said 80%. 80% ?!?!?!?!? So i still have a 20% chance of not getting this place and wasting my time to wait for NEXT WEEK.
My wife jumped in and said. "We are not going to wait for NEXT WEEK. I want the answer NOW!!!" My wife also demanded that since the sales person promised us the answer today, WE MUST HAVE THE ANSWER !!! The sale person called the other party again. Same thing, give them time to consider. Now my wife is getting a bit hot. As usual, anyone stepping on her tail will get it big time from her. "look Miss XXX, they have 80% chance of signing the contract with you and 20% chance of not signing. Where else, i am 100% signing with you.Which one do you choose?? 100% or 80% ??? I can pay you deposit $5000 now if you can signed the contract with us NOW!" The sales person was stunned. So am I. i think my jaw just dropped. Eyeballs glued to my wife.
WOW !!!!!! ..... The sales person quickly call the couple again and said that the had expired they time in considering. Mrs Ang, let me go through the detail of the contract. and later you follow me to the cashier and place a deposit. Ahhhh..... looking at that satisfactory, I am the winner simle on my wife's face.

Now my nightmare!!! 5K deposit !!! Oh my God ..... Where to get 5k !!! paid NETS and the cashier said, "Sorry NETS limit is 2K per day" "Excuse me, could you please hold on a while." took out my phone and dial Citibank Credit Card Dept. "Miss, i am in need of a urgent temporary credit limit increase. Now NOW Now right at this moment to pay a deposit for my wedding banquet. Please help me ..." "Sorry Sir, we couldn't do it right now, we need time to process and to evaluate you financially" "Please, could i speak with your manager regarding this issue as i am in the mids of paying the deposit" Put me on hold for like 15mins and returned with the best answer at that moment of time. "Thank YOu for holding, My officer had reviewed you application for the temporary credit increase and had accepted your request. You may now use your card to pay the deposit. Let me brief you one the terms and conditions of this facility...." "Sorry Miss, i am in a hurry, could you please brief me some other time? thank you"

Case closed. Venue BOOKED !!!!!

Happy smiling faces walked out of the lobby.
